The Grotthof is a farm with character, which is reflected in its architecture. Evidence of the past, thick walls, majestic buildings: there is much to discover as you stroll around the farm and the house.
It is a symbol, our guardian angel, and is closely linked to the history of the Grotthof. It was erected between the house and the barn in 1519 and has been restored ever since. It is so important to the Grotthof that it is depicted on the farm's seal and marks many of the tools, boundary stones and posts. When guests arrive, they are greeted by the cross between the house and the barn. It can also be found on the gable of the house and in the Grotthof logo.
In our farmhouse parlour the wood panelling plays the main role. The mixture of pine and larch gives it a very unique character. The "Bauernstube" was newly paneled in 1929 by "Leitner Sepp". The result: everyone feels immediately at home. A room for conviviality, the perfect place for breakfast for our guests and a pleasant lounge.
Thick walls of 2.5 metres in the upper cellar with vaulted ceilings, niches carved into the rock for storing wine barrels, and the 800-year-old larch beams in the deep cellar that survived the fire of 1671: the walls of the Grotthof have many stories to tell. Stalwart companions that impress!
The beams in our "Rosengarten" room and "Eggental" holiday apartment, which were uncovered during the renovation in 2014, give our guests a good insight into the former construction style of the Grotthof. The spirit behind it all? Annelie, of course, whose training as a church painter made her the perfect choice. The unusual colours and shapes, combined with modern accents in the living areas, create a particularly cosy atmosphere.
The weather cross is still the landmark of the Grotthof. It still stands between the house and the barn and has been continuously renovated since 1519. It is the central feature of the Grotthof: It is immortalised as the farm's seal, is used to mark boundary stones/posts and tools, and can be found symbolically around the farm, including on the gable of the house. It also adorns the old Eggental women's costume and our current logo.
It towers over the house, is up to 19.5 metres high and has a volume of more than 4,000 m³: we are talking about the barn, built in 1928, which stands next to the house. Its dark wood, refined architecture and imposing size give it a very special charm. It is indispensable for the work on the farm, as a place to store hay, a garage for cars and machines, and a place to store wood and tools.
Our hut is located on the alpine pastures of Obereggen, just below the Latemar. Surrounded by colourful and fragrant meadows, with a view of the bizarre mountain formations of the Dolomites and the soothing silence at almost 2,000 metres above sea level, it is a very special gem. Over the next few years, the hut, which dates back to 1904, will be restored to its former glory.
